During the lock down and the run-up to it I was submitting cartoons to various periodicals and some were published but in a very competitive market many more were not. Unfortunately these cannot be used in future as they were like snapshots of a fast moving picture and consequently had very short shelf lives. But although many cartoons missed the boat due to the speed of events when I looked back on them it seemed to me that viewed serially they provided, as a diary can, an account of what society was feeling and seeing throughout this highly unusual period. After all the cartoonist is trying to resonate with what he imagines to be the feelings of his audience at the time of going to press and therefore a cartoon can pinpoint what was going on at a particular moment in time and help remind us of what we were really thinking back then as opposed to now.

I hope that  the cartoons on this blog give some sense of this phenomenon …they did to me!
